Rootstock breeding

Frédéric Georget, Sophie Léran, Axel Labeyrie, and Hervé Etienne participated in a workshop held from June 2 to 5, 2026, in Sitges, Spain, organized by Agromillora, a global leader in nursery innovation. Entitled “Promoting Rootstock Selection & Resilience of European Fruit Tree Crops,” the workshop was organized within the framework of the EU-funded Horizon Europe BOLERO project and brought together 30 international experts from 10 research institutions and companies across Europe, Vietnam, and Nicaragua.

Discussions focused on rootstock breeding, grafting techniques, and the development of more resilient production systems capable of addressing climate-related challenges. Participants shared expertise across several major crop species, including Mediterranean fruit crops such as grapevine, olive, citrus, and fruit trees (particularly apple), as well as tropical crops including coffee, cocoa, rubber tree, and oil palm. The workshop fostered knowledge exchange, identified synergies across different crop sectors, and generated new research directions aimed at accelerating innovation and promoting sustainable agriculture capable of meeting the current and future challenges posed by climate change.
