How do research staff get involved?

Attacks on science and research have intensified in recent years, taking many forms: denigration, disinformation, the deliberate spread of doubt, and the marginalisation of scientific voices. These attacks raise many questions, including the role of scientists in society and their responsibility to engage with environmental and social crises.

The UMR Sustainability Working Group wanted to give IRD researchers and their partners in the Global South an opportunity to share their perspectives on how they approach their commitment through their research projects. It was essential to include a diverse range of participants, in terms of professional status (permanent researchers, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students), backgrounds and scientific disciplines.

Each participant was asked the same question: “In the face of the social and environmental emergency, what is your commitment as a scientist?”

The result: six individual journeys and six distinct perspectives, each rooted in personal experience, inviting us to reflect in turn on how we position our professions in the face of today’s crises.
